The UK Wersi Saga

Wersi Owners Nervous ?
The latest developments with Wersi in the UK must surely make many owners of the German made instruments feel unsure about the future.   Much of what you are about to read is already known by many Wersi enthusiasts.   The facts are presented here so that all concerned may know the current position.   The following is the UK Director's (or to be precise - the former Director's) history of the business formally known as WERSI UK Limited:-

In August 1999 Mr Roy Scott signed a contract with Wersi in Germany to be the sole distributors of all Wersi products in the UK. As Wersi UK Ltd he was the sole shareholder and director.

Mr Scott claims that problems in supplies from Germany, plus the fact that software and operating sytems were not functioning correctly, lead to a situation that could not be overcome. In fact he states that Wersi products became increasingly unreliable with the associated repair costs difficult to afford. Repairs were subcontracted to a firm called Permatech and the large amount owing to them lead to the position becoming very unstable with the uncertainty surrounding supplies of equipment. In order that the company could trade in products other than Wersi, Mr Scott decided to change the company’s name and in September 2004, Wersi UK Ltd., became known as Keyboard Instruments Ltd. However, when the full extent of the company’s liabilities became clear, the director decided to consult with the company’s accountant. Following those discussions, Insolvency Practitioners were consulted and the director decided to cease trading and to take steps to place the company into liquidation.

In our Internet search to help our readers, we came across several sites of interest and would advise Wersi owners to look at them.

An interesting report on one site states that in 1999 (the year mentioned above) the production and software rights of WERSI Germany were taken over by Thomas Music. Some of the WERSI range at that time was marketed under the Thomas label. Component parts are the same so spares and software were said to be obtainable from them. Further information can be obtained from the Thomas web site: Thomas Music

As far as WERSI in the UK is concerned, a new web site is being constructed and viewers are invited to click here for details: Future Wersi in the UK

A complete list of all organ-keyboard manufacturers can be obtained from ORGANfax: ORGANfax - List of manufacturers

We give no opinion on the foregoing - we simply present the facts to keep everyone informed so that they can form their own conclusion and be in a position to view the relevant web sites.

Perhaps we should add, to be fair, that there is provision on the "new" Wersi UK web site for Wersi owners to get support if they should need it.   Wersi Support

A Tribute to the late Roy Scott - The UK Wersi Man Who Tried Hard
Roy Scott You will probably remember the television advert of the man who liked an electric shaver so much that he bought the company. It was a similar story with Roy Scott who was a Wersi organ owner and loved the organ so much he decided form his own company to promote and sell them.

Keyboard Instruments Limited was incorporated in August 1999 under the name WERSI UK Limited with Roy Scott as the sole shareholder and director. Wersi UK Ltd was to become the sole distributors of all Wersi products in the UK.

Roy put much effort into his new business, including the use of a mobile demonstration unit and newletters to to keep customers and enthusiasts in touch with his Wersi empire.

Perhaps one of his biggest achievements was to install a Wersi top of the range organ at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Roy’s presence at organ-keyboard festivals was yet another attempt to promote the German made instruments. Claudia Hirschfeld and Mark Whale were brought over from Germany for some of these events, including the making of Claudia's DVD at the Carnglaze Slate Caverns in Cornwall.

His dreams and aspirations of his Wersi empire in the UK were sadly shattered when, according to the report above, the German Wersi factory failed to support him with a satisfactory back-up service to continue his UK operations. Roy claimed that the unreliablity of the Wersi product, during his involvement, was not worthy of his customers who had put their faith in him. He wanted to put his customers first to the extent that he passed on the servicing to a British company in the hope that customer satisfaction could be maintained. But even this arrangement had problems, which lead to the liquidation of Roy's keyboard instrument empire.

Resulting from the stress of the saga, Roy’s health deteriorated and he sadly died on 27th December 2005 leaving his widow, a daughter and a grand-daughter.

Ed.Note   It was thought that the above should be published to give a more balanced view of the situation.
