Welcome to all those involved in LIVE MUSIC. The name of the page speaks for itself and we have to say that the Musicians' Union has long used the words Keep Music Live on its promotional material - we certainly support them in this respect.

With backing tracks used by singers and recorded music from Juke Boxes and other items it is more important than ever to focus on live music.

The introduction of the Licensing Act, 2003, is the latest threat to live musicians' - that's the view of some oppostion MP's - not just ours. New Labour MP's would hardly agree with us - because they tow the party line. Having said this, Gordon Brown our new Prime Minister, said: "It's time for change." - so we must wait and see. In the meantime we would like to hear from those who have been affected by the Act in an effort to bring it to the attention of those who can do something about it - and perhaps the PM himself.

We wish to thank Keyboardnews.com for their efforts in bring the attention of this Act to its readers and for passing information on to us.

The UK Law and Music
The Public Entertainment Licensing Act,2003 (PEL)
This Act is considered so restrictive for musician's and music played in public places that an e-petition was placed on the Prime Minister's Downing Street website during the early part of 2007. For almost three months it was the top listed petition with thousands adding their names to it day by day.

The petition expired on 11th June 2007 after over 79,900 people from all walks of life had put their names on it. Below we look as some aspects of it, including the response from the 10 Downing Street office and another that represents the views of those who signed it. If you have another view we would be pleased to hear from you.

Details
The Downing Street e-petition on burdensome regulations for live music and dancing expired on 11th June 2007 after being on the web site for a few months. Since April it has been the top running petition and there was a time when thousands of people were putting their names on it every day.

What the petition creator said:-
The recently introduced changes in licensing law have produced an environment where music and dance, activities which should be valued and promoted in a civilised society, are instead damaged by inappropriate regulation. We call on the Prime Minister to recognise this situation and take steps to correct it.

The Governments Response
The Downing Street Office has now responded by email to all those who signed the E-petition. You can read what was said by clicking on the following link:-

Welcome Gordon Brown
".....it's time for change."

Gordon Brown - New Britsh Prime Minister - time for change We welcome Gordon Brown, the new British Prime Minister, especially with his opening words: "It's time for change". We trust that these words will apply to the unpopular Licensing Act, 2003 and its application to live music.

Peter Hain - MP Peter Hain, wrote on our behalf to Tessa Jowell, the Minister of Culture under the former Prime Minister, Tony Blair. The reply is on what we now call our "saga" page. It is quite likely that this letter is one of the last ones that Tessa Jowell wrote as she has been replaced in the new cabinet.
We have now brought Mr Hain's attention to the petition results and have asked him to contact the new Culture Minister and pass on the views and comments on this website. We will let you know the outcome in due course.
