From: Weyhill - the personal views of Terry Trevett

SUBJECT: Organ - What Organ?

With reference to this recent interesting article, there are two points on which I should like to invite your observations. Whilst I generally agree with the main theme of the argument it might be worthwhile considering:

(a) Would a change of name from 'Society' to 'Club' suggest that membership is an integral part of the organisation? As you know, we do not have a membership system at Weyhill, and it is not under consideration - although the introduction of some form of database (e.g. 'Friends of ...') is a future possibility). The word 'Club' seems to suggest membership more than the word 'Society' - do you agree?

(b) Talk of such 'modernising' should also incorporate changing the word 'Meeting' to 'Concert'. The use of the word 'Meeting' seems antiquated to me. When I was first asked when and where we had our 'meetings' I replied, "About every other month at the Chairman's house". That caused a little puzzlement!
...........................

I recently had a meeting with an experienced Marketing Consultant and he made the valid point that clubs or societies like ours might be dissuading certain (e.g. younger) people from attending concerts by virtue of the low admission prices! For example, tickets for our Claudia Hirschfeld concert at The Lights theatre in Andover next month are priced at £4, whereas most events being staged at that venue are priced at £10 plus ... and some observers will base their opinions as to the standard of entertainment being offered on the admission price being charged. I can appreciate this logic - can you?

Notwithstanding these comments, over 200 (of 240 max.) tickets have already been sold - but over 90% of these have been sold at our recent concerts. The Theatre - who gave us good coverage in their brochure (which has a mailing list of around 7,000) - has sold less than 20 tickets. My guess is that the Theatre sales might well have been higher if the tickets had been priced at say £7.50 or £10. 'Catch 22' perhaps? Interesting thought? Next year it will be the turn of the Keyklix Klan to 'test the water'.

We welome further views about societies and clubs - especially from those who have changed the name of the organisation..........Ed.

It should be explained that our correspondent was viewing an American open forum about fun at festivals and noted the following message sent to Andrew Gilbert in the UK. As it was an open forum we publish it as it was written.

Andy, I do not know my European geography as I should, but I wonder if you have ever heard of/or been to the Lyme Bay Organ Festivals and promoted by Alan Ashman and/or someone named Cled (sp?) Griffin??

I obtained a video (ebay? can't remember) several years ago of highlights of this festival and it looked like a LOT of fun. I seem to remember some of the musicians names were Andy Griffin, Chris Powell, someone named Bowers, a duo named KeyClicks? and some very young players named "Longshawn" I think, can't remember the rest. SEVERAL different organ manufacturers, not just one, (even Casio was allowed in!) and it was so very relaxed and low-key it looked more like a "family reunion" than a promotional event/concert. I would love to find something like that in this country I could go to!

I've never heard anyone mention going to one, so I assume they are either not very well known, or maybe in a remote area? It's my understanding they have been running yearly for over 20 years, so they DO have a real following!
